Metric conversions

It's interesting how often I've had to use my calculator and excel to convert recipe metrics (thanks America ^_^).  Well the fact that I don't yet have a scale also does not help. Anyways, I find this website http://www.pastryscoop.com/category/look-it-up/conversions/ a very helpful resource for this purpose.

Another useful guide for conversion, is to look at the packaging for serving size, usually they have TBSP / cup conversion to the weight metric.

I'm also listing below some the most frequent conversions I've had to do for my baking so far. The list is a work in progress, which I will try to continuously update.

Volumes

  • 1 cup = 240 ml
  • 1 TBSP = 15 ml = 3 tsp
  • 1 tsp = 5 ml
  • 1 gr watery liquids (water, milk, oil) = 1 ml
  • 1 cup = 8 fl oz. Note that fl oz (liquid oz) is different from weight ounce.

Eggs (US)
  • 1 large egg = 50 ml = 50 gr
    • 1 large egg yolk = 33 gr
    • 1 large egg white = 17 gr
  • 1 jumbo egg = ? ml = ? gr
Butter (US)
  • 1 stick = 1/2 cup = 8 TBSP
  • 1 TBSP = 14 gr

    All-Purpose wheat Flour
    • Spoon and sweep (cake recipes): 1 cup = 125 gr = 4.4 ounces (referring to weight)
    • Scoop and sweep (bread recipes): 1 cup = 142 gr = 5 ounces (referring to weight)

    Tapioca
    • 1 TBSP = 7.5 gr
    • 1 cup = 120 gr
    Cornflour

    • 1 TBSP = 10 gr
    • 1 tsp = 3.3 gr
    Gelatin powder
    • 1 tsp = 3.1 gr
    • 1 envelope (knox) = 7.2 gr

    Sugar:
    • 1 TBSP = 12 gr
    • 1 tsp = 4 gr
